“COSTELLO-Jan. 2, 1920, Hanorah, aged 70 years. Funeral Monday, Jan. 5, at 9:30 a.m., from chapel, 1115 W. 12th-st., to Holy Family church, where high mass will be celebrated; autos to Mount Carmel.”

“DURKEN-Eileen M., beloved daughter of Thomas J. and Agnes Carroll Durken, fond sister of John W. Funeral Monday, Jan. 5, 1920, from her late residence, 5120 S. Aberdeen-st., at 10 a.m., by autos to Mount Olivet; for further information call Oakland 6428.”

  1. I find it interesting that women’s maiden names were included. I can’t remember ever seeing that in obituaries from that time period and earlier. Unless, of course, the deceased was wealthy and a reference to a high society line also made news.

      Thanks for reading my posts! You’ll have to peek at the 1894 obituaries I transcribed. It’s amazing how many contain maiden names, even when the married woman is not the subject of the death notice. That’s what makes these such valuable resources, especially for those “between census years” dates of death. And why I feel it’s so important to preserve this information whenever possible.
