Tis A Little Grave
Tis a little grave, but O have care, For world wide hopes are buried here. How much of light, how much of joy, is buried with our darling boy.

Ruth’s headstone is no longer attached to its base. It lies in the soft grass near her parents’ headstones. Ruth is buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis and has a memorial on Find A Grave. May she and her parents rest in peace.
Another darling girl rests a few steps from Edna Miriam Paul‘s final resting place in Chicago’s St Luke Cemetery. Isabel Moenke was born 31 July 1899, just in time to be recorded in the 1900 census. It was the only one in which she would appear. Her parents, Leo and Emma (nee Kaeding) were married in Chicago 01…
The epitaph on this headstone took my breath away. In the still morning air, the the loss this family endured was almost palpable. Frank’s headstone is surrounded by large trees in a lovely section of Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. May he rest in peace.
The 1900 census is one of my favorites because of columns 11 and 12; ‘mother of how many children’ and ‘number of those children living’. The genealogist side of me sees this information as an important piece of the family group puzzle. But as a mother the numbers tug at my heart, especially when there is a face attached to…

Our Man in Havana, directed by Carol Reed, was one of the most viewed movies released that year. Advise and Consent by Allen Drury was one of the best…
Happy birthday little sister!
The loss of a child must have been devastating to our ancestors. I can only imagine the anguish of parents who lost several children. Like James and Bridget, the parents of Margaret, Michael and Mary Ryan. State registration of births in Minnesota began in 1900, but the rules weren’t really followed statewide until after 1915. Death records have only been…
The first “baby in a shell” headstone I had ever seen was in a large garden cemetery known for a somewhat elite clientele. In October, I encountered another example of this artistic style of carved stone in a small cemetery in rural Wisconsin. The epitaph reads “here lies at rest Emely Skoba born 3 august…
Using the cool new Find A Grave app, Husband and I stopped at a dozen or so cemeteries during a recent road trip. Hartwell Cemetery is a small, lovely white-picket-fenced graveyard near Abells Corners and Lafayette Township Wisconsin. Established in 1844, there are many old headstones and the same family names are seen over and over. One…
