From the June 3, 1896 issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune; “John Berg, A Veteran Fireman, Dies. For the Last Half Century a Familiar Figure in and Around Chicago.

John Berg, one of the first fireman in the City of Chicago, died yesterday at his home, No. 181 Henry street. He was 69 years old and had lived in Chicago since 1846. He had lived forty-two years in the house in which he died and was a familiar figure to the residents of that portion of the city.

Mr. Berg became a member of the fire department in 1848 as a member of Volunteer Hose Company No. 1, with headquarters in Dearborn avenue, between Kinzie and Michigan streets. Fire Chief Swenie knew him well and expressed regret when informed of his death.”

John’s daughter Susan married Elmer Eugene Clarke 03 Aug 1892. They had 10 children during the 60+ years of their marriage. Elmer’s brother William Penrod Clarke is my 2nd great-grandfather.
