The following notices of death appeared on page 5 of the August 10, 1894 issue of the Chicago Daily News;

“AHARE-Aug. 9, 1 p.m., BRIDGET AHARE (nee Courtney), wife of Frank Ahare and sister of Jerry, Patrick, John and Tim Courtney and of Mrs. Patrick Buckley and Julia Courtney, aged 32 years. Funeral Sunday, Aug 12, from 9002 Green Bay-av., at 8:30 a.m., to St. Patrick’s church, and thence to C. P. F. depot at South Chicago, to Union depot, via C., M. & St. Paul funeral train, 12:30, to Calvary. New York papers please copy.”

“CHLOESSY-Funeral of MICHAEL CHLOESSY, late of Keeley-st., Saturday, Aug. 11, 1894, 1 p.m., by cars to Calvary.”

“SCANLAN-Aug. 9, 1894, ANN, widow of the late Jeremiah Scanlan, and mother of Edward J. and Nellie Scanlan. Funeral from her late residence, 2036 Wabash-av., Saturday, at 10 a.m., to St. Mary’s church, thence by carriages to Calvary.”

The following notices of death appeared on page 6 of the August 10, 1894 issue of the Chicago Daily News;

“ACKERMAN-Aug. 10, 1894, CARRIE, beloved daughter of Mary and the late David Ackerman and sister of Ida and Mrs. Falkenstien, aged 22 years. Funeral from her late residence, 98 W. 13th-st., at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, carriages to Waldheim.

Dearest Carrie, thou hast left us,

And thy loss we deeply feel;

But it’s God who has bereft us,

And He can our sorrows heal.

“AXPEL-At his residence, 918 38th-st., Aug. 10, 1894, JAMES, beloved son of Annie and the late Thomas Axpel, aged 38 years. Funeral Sunday, at 9 a.m., to Church of Nativity, thence by carriages to Calvary.”

“BARTHOLOMEW-At 78 Center-av., Thursday morning, HARRIET ESTHER BARTHOLOMEW, aged 77 years. Funeral and burial at Elmwood Ill.”

“BOCK-Aug. 9, 1894, ELLEN BOCK (nee Barrett), beloved wife of J.P. Bock and mother of M.J., P.D. and Lily Bock, aged 50 years and 3 months. Funeral Sunday, Aug. 12, at 11:30 a.m., from her late residence, 1729 Briar-pl. to Our Lady of Mount Carmel church, thence by carriages to Calvary. “DELAHYDE-WILLIE-beloved son of the late Michael and Mary Delahyde (nee Glass), aged 22 years and 4 months. Funeral Saturday at 9 a.m. from 3211 Union-av., to Nativity church, thence by carriages to Calvary.”

“DILLON-At his residence, 781 Hinman-st., Aug. 9, 1894, Officer WILLIAM DILLON, husband of Bridget Dillion (nee McNamara), aged 44 years; native of Ballenagard, County Limerick, Ireland. Funeral Sunday, 9 a.m., to St. Pius’ church, carriages to Calvary.”

“DONAVEN-At his home, 7112 Drexel-av., THOS. DONAVEN, native of Galway, Ireland, aged 30 years. Funeral to Mount Olivet Sunday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m.”

“EARY-Aug. 10, 1894, at 3844 Parnell-av., CATHERINE EARY (nee Moynehan), beloved mother of Mrs. Michael Cronen and sister of Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Remington; native County Limerick, Ireland. Funeral Sunday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m., to Church of Nativity, thence to 49th and Halsted-st., depot and by cars to Mount Olivet.”

“FISHER-Aug. 9, 1894, at 4220 Wentworth-av., MARY, beloved daughter of Henry and Isabel Fisher (nee Carroll), aged 7 years and 10 months. Funeral Sunday at 9 a.m., by carriages to Mount Olivet.”

“O’CONNOR-Aug. 9, 1894, Daniel, beloved son of John and Mary O’Connor, aged 6 years 2 months and 22 days. Funeral Saturday, the 11th, from parents’ residence, 975 34th-ct., at 9:30 a.m., by carriages to Mount Olivet.”

“OHLSON- Aug. 9, EDGAR O. H., only beloved son on Olof J. and Agnes J. Ohlson, aged 9 years 8 months and 12 days. Funeral from parents’ residence, 1639 N. Halsted-st., Sunday at 2 p.m., by carriages to Graceland.”

“OLSON-Aug. 10, 1894, at Norwood Park, MILTON, son of John and Minnie Olson. Funeral Saturday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m., to Norwood Park cemetery.”

“RONDA- Aug. 8, 1894, Mrs, HENDERIEKA RONDA, aged 31 years. Funeral Aug. 11, from residence, 666 Morgan-st., at 11 a.m., to Forest Home.”

“SCHMEID-Aug. 10, 1894, ANNA, beloved wife of Gottfried Schmeid, aged 64 years. Funeral from her late residence, 383 5th-av., Sunday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m., by carriages to Waldheim.”

“SMITH- Aug. 10, 1894, Mrs. ANNA SMITH, formerly Mrs. Welsh, sister to Mrs. Scanlan. Funeral Saturday, at 10 o’clock, from late residence, 3735 Grant-av., by carriages to Calvary.”

“STEELE-Aug. 9, 1894, JOHN, beloved husband of Margaret Steele (nee Ring), aged 45 years and 3 months. Funeral Sunday, at 1 p.m., from late residence, 1253 61st-st. Funeral private at Oakwoods.”

My transcription above is exactly as the notices appeared on pages 5 and 6 of the August 10, 1894 issue of the Chicago Daily News with the exception of quotation marks at the beginning and end of each obituary. Abbreviations, capitalizations and references to people, places and things are indicative of the era in which this information was published. When possible, the deceased are also memorialized on Find A Grave.

  1. Thanks for your good work, Laura! Boy, did I find some newspaper articles today. I found one right after I heard about Robin Williams about a man who died from morphine addiction over 100 years ago. So sad.

    • 100-year-old newspapers are my favorite kind! Hope you found something that will help in your family history research.

      I’m deeply saddened by the loss of Robin Williams. Such a tragedy. I can only imagine the despair he was feeling to go to such an extreme. The poor man – my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
