My paternal grandparents Harold Clarke Mueller and Frances Lois Mangels were married in Chicago Illinois 94 years ago today ~ August 24th, 1930.

Harold’s parents, my paternal great-grandparents Alfred Jacob Mueller and Ellen Gertrude Clarke were also married in Chicago, also on August 24th. Their wedding took place in 1907.

Ellen Gertrude’s parents celebrated their wedding anniversary on August 24th as well. My paternal great-great grandparents William Penrod Clarke and Mary Ella Littrell were married in Springfield Ohio August 24th, 1882.

That is so cool and the fact that you have the marriage certificates is just wonderful. I have a marriage license of my grandparents from Cook County of 1890 identical to yours. Interesting that they hadn’t changed the form in at least 7, maybe 10 years. They used to have such interesting certificates. Your first one in 1882 is also interesting. They didn’t finish filling it out and the notation “don’t publish”. I wonder why that was, but the man who signed was duly sworn that he married them. Also that they were unmarried and he, more than 21 years of age and she, more than 18 years of age and not nearer of kin that second cousins. I have never seen all that on a marriage license before.

I have often wondered about the “don’t publish” notation too. It’s a little disappointing because a newspaper blurb about this marriage would be a treasure. William and Ella were married in Springfield Ohio and later moved to Chicago.
