Deaths and Funerals
“James F. O’Connor. Funeral services were held today for James F. O’Connor, Knights of Columbus secretary in France during the World War, who died two days ago at his home at 2054 East 69th street. He was 75 years old.
A former member of the Board of Local Improvements, Mr. O’Connor was active in the founding of the Knights of Columbus organization in the Chicago area. He was a charter member and former Grand Knight of the Marquette Council.
He is survived by a brother, the Rev. Francis J. O’Connor and four sisters, Miss Mary E. O’Connor, Mrs. Margaret Gibbs, Emelio Raggio, and Sister Francis De Sales of St. Louis. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.”
“William Otis Swett Jr. – Word was received in Chicago today of the death in Atlanta yesterday of William Otis Swett Jr., an artist, who was a pupil of Whistler. He was the brother of Arthur Hollister Swett, president of the American Tag Company, Chicago. Surviving also is a sister, Mrs. J. W. Newton of Newton Center, Mass.
Mr. Swett was born in Worcester, Mass., May 5, 1859. He was a member of the Salamagundi Club of New York City, and the Society of Independent Artists. His specialties were marine paintings and landscapes.
Burial will be in Chicago. Arrangements will be announced later.”
“Mrs. Cherry E. Lutton. Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Cherry E. Lutton, 64 years old, who died yesterday in her home at 7311 Stewart avenue, at the Church of the Annunciation, 78th street and Lowe avenue, at 2:30 p.m., Monday. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Lutton was the wife of the Rev. Arnold Lutton, who for 27 years was rector of the Church of the Annunciation. Surviving also are a daughter Cherry A., and a son, Dr. E. A. Lutton, 7839 Eggleston avenue.”
“George W. Smith. George W. Smith, 82 years old, died yesterday in his home at 838 Sheridan road, Evanston. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Memorial Park Cemetery chapel.
Mr. Smith retired 25 years ago as power superintendent from the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Louise Marie and three children, Herbert L., George Jr.., and Mabel.”
“Miss. Ailsie L. Miller. Miss Ailsie L. Miller, 58 years old, portrait painter, was found dead yesterday, apparently of heart disease, in her home at 1115 East 47th street. Miss Miller won the first prize for studies from life in the Juiliam Academy in Paris and was associated with the Chicago Portrait Company for 30 years.
She is survived by a brother, Charles Miller of Dallas, Tex.”
“Mrs. Philip A. S. Franklin. New York, Oct. 15 -(AP)- Mrs. Philip A. S. Franklin, 55 years old, wife of the chairman of the board of United States Lines and the International Mercantile Marine Company, died early today after a brief illness. Mrs. Franklin was the former Laura Merryman of Baltimore. Two sons and a daughter also survive.”
“Johannes Poulsen. Copenhagen, Denmark, Oct. 15 – (UP)- Johannes Poulsen, 56 years old, famous actor, died yesterday. He had undergone an operation for a brain tumor. He directed the Everyman Theater at Hollywood in 1936.”
“Charles Creighton Carlin. Washington, Oct. 15. – (UP)- Charles Creighton Carlin, former member of Congress from Virginia and owner of the Alexandria Gazette, died at his home here yesterday. He was 72 years old. Funeral services will be held Monday.”
“Orley McDaniel Canter. Elmira, N.Y., Oct. 15 – (AP) – Orley McDaniel Canter, executive vice-president and director of the American-La France-Foamite Corporation, died at his home here last night. He was 54 years old.”
