The following story appeared on the front page of the April 10, 1894 issue of the Chicago Daily News:
“Crushed by the “Times” Elevator.
F.E. Thorne, who said he had no home, went into the Times building this morning to sleep. He crept too near the elevator shaft and when the car made a descending trip his left leg was crushed. He was removed to the county hospital, where his injury was pronounced not serious.”
